Youth Spotlight: M

Updated: Apr 29

In a world where every journey is unique, M's path to Covenant House Illinois (CHIL) is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of community support. Hailing from Canada, M found themselves embarking on a life-changing adventure to Chicago, a city vastly different from their rural roots. Little did they know, this journey would lead them to discover a newfound sense of belonging and opportunity at CHIL.

Faced with a challenging family situation, M made the brave decision to leave home in February 2023, seeking stability and a fresh start. M's introduction to CHIL began with a simple referral from Covenant House Toronto. Upon arriving in Chicago, they sought refuge at CHIL's drop-in center before being directed to the interim housing program.

After entering CHIL's interim shelter program in June 2023, M encountered Miss Beverly, a member of our Street Outreach and Aftercare team, who went above and beyond to assist them in obtaining essential documentation. Despite encountering bureaucratic hurdles and a lengthy six-month wait time, Miss Beverly's unwavering support ensured M's journey towards independence continued unhindered.

With a desire to carve out a future filled with possibilities, M set their sights on education and employment. Enrolling at Malcolm X College in September, M pursued their passion for computer science, leveraging their innate knack for all things tech. Supported by dedicated CHIL staff members like Mads and Camille, M navigated the application process with confidence, laying the foundation for their academic and professional journey.

In April 2024, CHIL hosted a group of experts from the Chicago Urban League to conduct workforce development workshops, right on our campus. The pivotal moment arrived when M seized an opportunity presented by the Chicago Urban League workshops. Eager to expand their horizons, M applied for an internship, showing their commitment to excelling in IT.

Embarking on this new chapter, M is embracing the responsibilities of their role with enthusiasm. As an IT Intern, they serve as a bridge between clients and technical solutions, troubleshooting minor issues with finesse and professionalism. With a paid internship offering $20 per hour, M's dedication and talent are finally being recognized, paving the way for a brighter future.

Reflecting on their journey, M expresses gratitude for the unwavering support provided by CHIL and the Chicago Urban League. Beyond offering shelter and guidance, these organizations have become beacons of hope, empowering individuals like M to realize their full potential. As they look towards the future, M dreams of securing stable housing, fostering genuine connections, and continuing to thrive in a supportive community.

“Coming to Covenant House Illinois was a turning point in my life. From the moment I arrived, I felt supported and understood,” says M. “Miss Beverly, Mads, and Camille believed in me, and the Urban League opened doors I never thought possible. I’m really looking forward to having a place to call my own, where I can just be myself.”

In M's story, we find inspiration and affirmation that with determination, support, and opportunity, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve their dreams. CHIL stands as a testament to the transformative power of compassion and empowerment, guiding young individuals towards a future filled with promise and possibility.
