Discovering My Passion for Youth Advocacy
I’m Bri Hailey. I’m a Detroit native, data analyst, cat mom, aspiring community connector, and youth advocate. Recently, I came across posts about Sleep Out 2024 on Instagram. They piqued my interest and led me to explore more about youth-focused organizations.
For the past year, I’ve volunteered with several organizations on the city’s South and West sides. However, I hadn’t found any that truly aligned with my values until I discovered Covenant House.
Understanding the Impact of Homelessness
As someone who has experienced youth homelessness, I know firsthand how difficult it is to move forward without a stable foundation. ‘Home’ is crucial, both figuratively and literally. It ranks high on the hierarchy of needs for a reason. The security and resources that come with stable housing are vital during a young person’s formative years.
When young people lack housing, it becomes challenging for them to focus on their physical and mental health, education, and dreams. They struggle to build a future and become valuable members of society. Every young person deserves to have their basic needs met, and Covenant House excels in providing that support.
The Power of Connection
In the past month of volunteering at Covenant House, I’ve learned that every little thing matters to the youth here. Every greeting, pep talk, pick-up game, and snack may seem mundane to those of us who are not at risk of homelessness. However, for these young people, our care and conversations are everything.
This space serves as an anchor for them in a world where they may feel lost. Every interaction counts. I’ve also met an incredibly clever and charismatic group of young people. There is immense talent and light within the youth at Covenant House, and it has been a joy to witness.
My Broader Volunteer Experience
Outside of Covenant House, I’m also volunteering with Forever Fortunate Felines, an animal rescue organization that paired me with one of my cats back in 2020. My passion for helping others extends beyond just one organization. I’ve also volunteered with Urban Growers Collective, Chicago Abortion Fund, and America Scores Chicago over the past year.
I believe in the power of community and the importance of giving back. It’s fulfilling to be part of something bigger than myself. I hope to continue being of service in the future.
Building a Brighter Future Together
Volunteering has opened my eyes to the struggles many young people face. It has also shown me the resilience and strength they possess. At Covenant House, I see young individuals working hard to overcome their circumstances. They inspire me every day.
I encourage others to get involved and support organizations that help youth experiencing homelessness. Whether through volunteering, donations, or simply spreading awareness, every effort counts. Together, we can build a brighter future for these young people.
In conclusion, my journey with Covenant House has been transformative. I’ve learned so much about the importance of support and connection. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the lives of young people in Chicago. Let’s continue to uplift and empower them, ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive.
